The Federal period was the golden age of American sampler making, as demonstrated by the variety and beauty of the examples in this gallery. The era saw the flowering of private girls' schools known as "ladies academies," where girls learned such genteel skills as music, art, and needlework; academic subjects were usually of secondary importance. Many of the samplers here were made at these schools.
