The arrangement and detailing of The Israel Sack Galleries (731, 732, and 733) pay homage to the Greek Revival style, inspired directly by two important surviving buildings: Alexander Jackson Davis's magnificent Colonnade Row (1833) on Lafayette Place in Lower Manhattan and the Alsop House (1838) on the campus of Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut. The furniture, metalwork, ceramics, and glass in this gallery freely mix Greek and Roman details and are in the "antique style," as the contemporary designer Thomas Hope described it in his influential publication Household Furniture and Interior Decoration (London, 1807).
