The furniture in the Martha J. Fleischman Gallery, created primarily by German and French immigrant designers and craftsmen, was inspired by traditional European styles at a time when America was struggling to come to terms with its national identity and to create a unique and coherent American culture. Its bold and ebullient naturalistic carving and unabashedly rich surface decoration demonstrate the efforts of new Americans to break away from European traditions.
