The architectural elements of the Richard and Gloria Manney Rococo Revival Parlor were once part of hat merchant Horace Whittemore's mid-nineteenth-century suburban villa, built about 1852, which overlooked the East River from the New York neighborhood of Astoria. The room is a modified re-creation of one of two matching parlors from the first floor. The current parlor suite by John Henry Belter is probably grander than Whittemore's original furniture. It is, in fact, among the most ornate produced by Belter, a German immigrant working in New York who invented a method of lamination whereby wood could be bent into deep curves and then elaborately carved.
