This room came from a house in Buffalo, New York, that was one of the few suburban residential house commissions executed by McKim, Mead & White in their early shingle style (1879–86). It was commissioned in 1882 by Mrs. Erzelia F. Metcalfe. A stair hall, or "living hall," with an inviting inglenook featuring a fireplace and built-in benches, was considered essential to a house built in the 1870s and 1880s. Inspired by the "halls" in early colonial houses, where people ate, slept, and performed myriad tasks, nineteenth-century living halls, in contrast, were meant only for relaxation and leisure.
