Peter M. Sacerdote Gallery Although members of the Hudson River School such as Sanford R. Gifford painted eyewitness accounts of the Civil War (1861–65) that emphasized landscape, the war generally coincided with a resurgence in figural art. Examples of both tendencies are displayed in this gallery. In painting, the figural trend was represented most vigorously by Winslow Homer, who visited the Union front as an artist-correspondent for the popular magazine Harper's Weekly. After the war, Augustus Saint-Gaudens and other sculptors produced portrait busts and statues to commemorate its heroes and martyrs. Painters and sculptors alike also found subjects in the nascent liberty and continuing poverty of America's former slaves.
