Program information

Roberta J. M. Olson, Curator of Drawings at the New–York Historical Society explores the relationship between the Grand Tour—a rite of passage for predominately wealthy young men—and the development of plein-air landscape painting.

Presented in conjunction with the exhibition The Path of Nature: French Paintings from the Wheelock Whitney Collection, 1785–1850, on view January 22–April 21, 2013.

    This picture probably depicts the sense of smell and formed part of a series of paintings representing the five senses. Three additional works from this series are known: "Hearing" (sold, Phillips, London, April 19, 1994, no. 103), "Taste" (dated 1791; Stedelijk Museum De Lakenhal, Leiden), and "Sight" (National Theatre, London).
