Imperial Privilege: Vienna Porcelain of Du Paquier, 1718-44:The complex decorative schemes on this box, including four hands of playing cards on the lid, a game of chess in progress on the underside, and three enigmatic inscriptions, suggest that it was commissioned as an intimate gift and expresses a coded message that cannot be easily deciphered today.
Inscription: [1] La Constance l'emporte (in black, in front on cover) [2] Napolitaine en amour (in black, in back on cover) [3] Le Roÿ Sans Vinqueur [sic] (in black, on bottom)
R. Thornton Wilson (until 1977; bequeathed to MMA)
