Seán Hemingway, curator, Department of Greek and Roman Art, discusses early twentieth-century reproductions of works from Sir Arthur Evans's historic excavations of Minoan Crete and Heinrich Schliemann's Mycenaean Greece.

Description

In the early archaeological literature on the Cesnola Collection, this figure was often considered a bearded Aphrodite. Although the garment and pose recall representations of Astarte, the subject is probably male.
