The intaglio portrays the horned and bearded head of Zeus Ammon, a conflation of the chief divinities of ancient Greece and Egypt. His oracular temple at the Siwa oasis in the Libyan desert was most famously visited by Alexander the Great in 331 B.C., but it continued to be consulted well into Roman times.
