By 1220, a vibrant metalwork industry had emerged in the Jazira region, centered on the city of Mosul. Jaziran workshops developed a style distinct from that of Khurasan, although inspired by exports from eastern Iran and bolstered by the arrival of metalworkers fleeing Mongol invasions. Fretwork background patterns and a new variation in scale between figural groupings and medallions characterize this style. Imagery of royal life plays a significant role, reflecting the princely patronage of many of these works.
