    Paintings of the mid-seventeenth century depict the private life of the court, illustrating the quiet moments of the emperors, queens, princes, and princesses in a manner very different from their formal portraits. Such paintings are interesting for their rendering of the precious objects that filled the palaces, from containers of ivory, jade, and enameled glass to jewelry
