Valentina was involved in a small concern called Valentina & Sonia, or Chez Sonia, in the mid-1920s. This evening dress was designed at the end of Valentina's and the mysterious Sonia's association in 1928. The cut of the gown and the embroidered design is inspired by traditional Russian folk costume, and is particularly interesting as Valentina was born in the Kiev region of Russia. During the 1920s, à la russe designs were highly desired, possibly reflecting the influx of Russian émigrés to Europe because of the Revolution. The embroidery, a typical motif used in Russian regional dress, is worked in two shades of metallic thread, giving the design depth and surface interest.
