Notes by E. Parry Janis in The Second Empire catalogue: "according to Prinet and Dilasser (1966, p. 120), this portrait of the poet, critic, and novelist Théophile Gautier (1811-1872) in a big shaggy overcoat and a damask skullcap is one of the first from Nadar's St. Lazare studio. This particular print was among the originals kept by Nadar in his personal collection. It remained in the family after the donations to the Cabinet des Estampes and the Départment des Manuscrits of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France. Another print, with a red signature stamp, is in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France."
