Since his first one-man show at Leo Castelli Gallery in New York, in 1962, until his death in 1997, Lichtenstein remained true to Pop Art's vision. These drawings from 1978 are studies for the large paintings Stepping Out (The Metropolitan Museum of Art) and Figures with Sunset (San Francisco Museum of Modern Art), which appropriate elements from Léger, Picasso, and others. They are part of a series made over two decades that reinterpreted great works of modern art in a Pop Art style.
