Dated: (on reverse of tang of tanto blade) Meiji san uma [no] toshi Hachi-gwatsu hi, the 3rd year of Meiji, the year of the Horse [i.e. 1870 A.D.], on a day of the 8th month).
Signed: (on tang of blade) Naniwa Getsuzan (or Gessan) Jeiichi horimono dosaku (i.e. Made by Naniwa getsuzan who also did the ornamental carving.) Seal-mark stamped int eh form of an owl: (Tei, or sa-da)
