Achala (literally, “immovable”) is a wrathful manifestation of Manjusri. Crowned and jeweled, he holds holds a sword in his right hand to cut through the fog of ignorance. The noose in his left is to catch the ignorant that he will destroy with the sword of wisdom. His left hand displays a threatening gesture of admonition (tarjani mudra). He is ringed by an aureole, the enflamed field of knowledge, and is surrounded by numerous manifestations, including protective emanations. In the lower register a Vajracharya Buddhist priest performs rituals for the benefit of the donor family seated opposite.
