[Amidst the mess of banal or pretentious smears crowding the Salon, the painter from Ornans strikes a blow, and we can take a breath of fresh air in front of his two canvases: one a small Landscape, a real gem, and the other a Beggar from Ornans, the last word in luminosity. Continue what you are doing, my good man, and those who are not yet painters will follow you, for you are far ahead of the pack, you who see truthfully and paint sincerely.]
