Ewer

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 461

An inscription in Greek records that this ewer was made for Thomas Cantacuzene, protspatharios (chief guardsman) in 1707. He would have been part of the class of Greek aristocrats known as Phanariots who remained powerful in Istanbul society during the Ottoman period.
