The Virgin, seated at the left on a stoop before a thatch and masonry structure, holds the Child on her knees with her left hand while raising the other in greeting. The bald Melchior kneels before the seated group, holding out a box into which the Christ Child reaches. Standing behind, each holding his gift, appear Balthazar and Caspar. On the other side of the enclosing wall, a landscape featuring a church, lake, and mountains recedes into the distance. The rich palette is dominated by the blue of the Virgin's mantle, the green sleeves and red robe of Melchior, and the gold and silver in the costumes of the standing kings. These vibrant tones are counterbalanced by the cool, limpid greens and blues of the landscape and sky. The plinth riser is inscribed, Hans Schwinli vō Münchē 1507: presumably the name of the Munich citizen who commissioned the panel. The nimbus of the Virgin is inscribed, ave maria gratia plena dominus tecum ("Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you").
