This brush holder illustrates the famous “Ode to the Pavilion of the Inebriated Old Man,” by Ouyang Xiu (1007–1072). The poem describes an event that occurred in 1045 in the mountains of Chuzhou, Anhui Province, where Ouyang served as prefect. Recently demoted from an influential position at court, Ouyang found scenic Chuzhou to be a pleasant distraction. He named the pavilion of the story’s title after himself, referring to his ability to become intoxicated from the pleasure of being in the company of his oldest associates. As is typical of the work of Gu Jue, this brush pot displays a complex composition and meticulously executed detail.
