Maebyeong is a Korean transliteration of the Chinese term meiping, which means "plum bottle." Although some maebyeong might have been used as flower vases, this type of Goryeo celadon was originally a container for wine (a few of the surviving examples have cup-shaped lids). The characteristic Korean maebyeong has a distinctly curvilinear profile, with voluminous shoulders, a tapered waist, and a slightly flared bottom.
