  • Description

This vessel embodies the beauty of elegant, simple form and monochrome color, as well as the tactile earthiness of the clay.

The peony flowers and leaves are rendered in bold shapes that capture the essence of this exuberant plant. The decorative techniques of incising the outlines and carving away the background through the white slip to accentuate the motifs (sgraffito) are characteristic of Buncheong vessels produced in the province of Jeolla. A distinctive genre of ceramics from the early Joseon period known for its startlingly modern aesthetic, Buncheong ware fully exploits the creative possibilities of surface design using white slip.
