Designated a “Living National Treasure” in 1955, Hamada was one of the most influential ceramicists of the folk-art, or mingei, tradition, which—like the Arts and Crafts Movement in the West—extolled the innate expressiveness of work created by earlier, anonymous craftsmen. He was a close friend of Bernard Leach, and briefly worked with him in Cornwall.
