Although deer have appeared in Chinese painting and decorative arts for centuries, the theme of one hundred deer in a landscape was an eighteenth-century innovation. The Chinese term for "one hundred deer," bai lu, is a homonym for the numerous economic, cultural, and social benefits that could accrue during the course of an official career, and the theme can thus be read as a wish to attain such a position.
