Interest in crackled glazes continued in the south at least until the fourteenth century, and was revived in the eighteenth. The combination of thicker dark lines and thinner brown lines seen in the glaze of this bowl is known in Chinese writings as “gold thread and iron wire” and is one of the features of Ge ware. Characterized by this complex pattern and multiple layers of glaze, Ge ware is thought to have been produced in the Hangzhou region, possibly in the same kilns that made the Guan or official ware for the court.
