Named after Mount Shōdai, wares with iron and straw-ash glazes were made in Kumamoto Prefecture from the late seventeenth to the early twentieth century, largely for local use. As part of the mingei, or folk art, movement, this style of pottery was revived in 1973 and eight workshops currently continue to work in this tradition.
