Although the original meaning of the term is uncertain, a Maigelein is generally a small shallow beaker used for drinking wine or other distilled beverages. The surface decoration of both vessels was achieved by rolling a hot gather of glass against a patterned surface. Because these ordinary vessels were little valued, few have survived intact.
