Inscription: The verso bears several inscriptions: the top is inscribed in black chalk with initials obscured by tape from an old mounting; to the right of center, two lines in graphite read, "Isle of Arran early morn - [?] Richardson from my mother", and below that, "21 x 15" and "N.22133A"; beneath the Davis gallery stamp in the lower right corner, the inventory number "D6-494" is written in black ink.
Marking: The lower right corner of the verso is stamped in black ink at with an eagle facing left and clutching six arrows: the mark of Davis Galleries, 231 East 60th Street, New York City .
