Instruction Offered in the Hazen Center
All eligible users of Watson Library are also eligible to receive instruction in the Hazen Center. Please note that signing up for individual instruction requires familiarity with the use of a mouse and a keyboard. For individual appointments, please call 212-650-2912 or email hazen.center@metmuseum.org.

Below is a listing of possible topics and resources for individual consultations. However, we will provide instruction on any of the Center's electronic resources by request. New York Times Database

Searching The Historical New York Times Database. This database provides access to a fully searchable digitized image of every page of the New York Times from its first issue in 1851 to 1999. It is a particularly valuable source for biographical information as well as the history of art patronage, galleries, and museums.

Index of Christian Art (ICA)

Effective searching of the Index of Christian Art, a thematic and iconographic index of early Christian and Medieval art objects. Besides iconographic descriptions of works of art, the database includes bibliographic records and information such as style, school, location, and more. The subject coverage of ICA is from early apostolic times to A.D. 1400. (With the inclusion of the holdings of the Morgan Library the date has been extended to 1700.)

Image Databases

An overview of various image databases including AMICO and the Bridgeman Art Library. An overview of free image resources available on the Web, such as SPIRO and online museum collections, will also be provided.

Timeline of Art History

Navigating the Timeline, now featuring art history through A.D. 1600. The Timeline provides an overview of world art history through a geographic interface. It features works of art, maps, chronologies, descriptive text, and Web links.

International Medieval Bibliography (IMB)

Effective searching of the International Medieval Bibliography, which indexes articles, conference proceedings, collected essays, Festschriften, and exhibition catalogues published world-wide. The subject coverage for IMB includes all subjects relating to the Middle Ages within the date range A.D. 400–1500. Geographical coverage includes Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa.

Watsonline

Learn how to effectively search Watsonline, the online catalogue of the Libraries of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Subjects covered include author, title, subject, and keyword searching, as well as limiting by language, location, year, and more.

Advanced Web Searching

It is important to get a basic idea of how to search the Web using various Internet searching tools. This class is for those who understand how to use the Web but would like to know how to cut their searching and browsing time in half. Searching tools such as Yahoo!, Google, and Alta Vista will be explained.

Introduction to the World Wide Web

This class will allow you to become familiar with the Web. Topics covered in this class include: basic Web vocabulary, navigating Web pages using the toolbar, opening URLs, and bookmarking favorite sites. You need to have had no prior knowledge or experience with the Web in order to take this class.

Periodical Indexes

Periodical indexes allow you to search for articles in art and humanities journals. This class usually includes Art Index and Bibliography of the History of Art (BHA/RILA/RAA) but can be devoted to any of the other electronic indexes in the Hazen Center, e.g., ARTbibliographies Modern. Each index searches differently and this class explains the various search options, tricks, and more.

JSTOR

Learn how to search and browse JSTOR (Journal Storage), an online archive of periodical titles, providing access to the entire journal content including text and images. All journals start at volume one and continue to within three to five years of the current subscription.

Auction Indexes

Information from auction house catalogs is available electronically, making it possible to search many years' worth of catalogs all at once. Search by artist, title of work, year of sale, and more. ArtFact Pro and ArtNet will be taught. Scipio, which can be used to locate sales catalogs, will also be included.
