Images for Educational Use

The Image Library consists of digital images, color transparencies, 35mm slides, and black-and-white photographs documenting the Museum's vast and rich collection. These images are available for purchase or license for study, editorial, and commercial usage.

As part of a major digital initiative, the Museum has made available a limited number of high-resolution digital images of Met objects to the scholarly community for specific uses only. At this time, selected Museum images are distributed via the Images for Academic Publishing (IAP) service of ARTstor under terms of a limited license called the Scholars License. These selected images are available for free to scholars affiliated with ARTstor and who are publishing journal articles, small print-run publications (up to two thousand copies), electronic reference materials, or classroom materials. Unaffiliated scholars may contact either the Museum at scholars.license@metmuseum.org or ARTstor at iap@artstor.org for temporary access to this collection.

The Image Library will continue to respond to all requests for images submitted in writing or via the image request form.

The Metropolitan Museum's Website experienced technical difficulties and did not receive image requests submitted from June 15–18, 2009. If you submitted a request during this time, please contact the Image Library immediately at 212-650-2562, or by email at image.licensing@metmuseum.org. We apologize for the inconvenience.
