Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Curatorial Fellowship 2009–2011

The Metropolitan Museum of Art announces two new curatorial fellowships funded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. These positions, designed for individuals who have received their doctoral degrees in art history or archaeology within the past five years, provide curatorial training and opportunities for scholarly research at the Metropolitan Museum. They are two-year positions, with the possibility of renewal for a third year.

Fellows will be fully integrated into one the Museum's curatorial departments and, while exposed to the full range of curatorial work, will devote their time to a specific Metropolitan Museum project. Individuals will work directly with one or more senior curators, who will serve as supervisors and mentors throughout the term of the fellowship. Each fellow will also have the opportunity to undertake an independent project in consultation with his or her supervising curator.

Two curatorial fellows will be selected for 2009–2011. Applicants whose work falls in one of the following subject areas are invited to apply:

Department of Arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas: Research and planning for a thorough curatorial survey of the Museum's African collection, which is expected to lead to a major publication on the permanent collection.

Department of Drawings and Prints: Research on original etchings by eighteenth-century French artists, which is expected to result in the preparation of an international loan exhibition "Etching as Sketch: Peintres Graveurs in Eighteenth-Century France."

Department of Drawings and Prints: Research on the Museum's collection of fifteenth-century Northern European engravings and woodcuts.

Department of European Paintings: Preparation and research for one or both of the future exhibitions "The Portrait in the Renaissance" and "The Age of Duccio."

Department of European Sculpture and Decorative Arts: Research on sculpture in the permanent collection, including a collection catalogue on Italian bronzes.

Department of Medieval Art and The Cloisters: Preparatory work and research related to the reinstallation of the galleries devoted to late medieval art, with the possibility of a future collection catalogue.

Eligibility
Candidates must hold doctoral degrees (or the equivalent, in countries outside the United States) in art history or archaeology in a field related to one of the above projects and conferred between November 7, 2003, and November 7, 2008. Candidates will be judged on their scholarly excellence and promise, as well as on their interest in the museum profession.

Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Curatorial Fellows are full-time exempt employees of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The positions have a start date of September 2009.
