Design for a Curved Frieze with Flemish Grotesques

Cornelis Bos Netherlandish

Not on view

Design for a symmetrically arranged curved frieze with grotesque decorations and two landscapes. At the center of the frieze a river god is served fruit by a satyr. The scene is flanked by caryatids and birds with spread wings. At the outer edges of the design vases with masks are placed atop a compartment containing a landscape. The design is inspired by Italian grotesques but contains elements typical for the Flemish grotesques as they were developed in the second quarter of the sixteenth century. Bos created many prints advocating the style, particularly after his departure from Antwerp in 1544.
