Since its inauguration in 1998, the Initiative's mission has been to ensure that this great institution is accessible and relevant to everyone—from every ancestry, walk of life, and age group. For more than a decade, we have strived to develop programming that reflects the interests and cultural histories of these diverse audiences. From special events to educational programs, our calendar is inspired by and showcases the cultures represented by the encyclopedic collections in our galleries. These collections—spanning five thousand years of civilization, from prehistory to the present—offer visitors the unique opportunity to come face to face with the artistic traditions of their ancestors.
Drawing multicultural audiences and providing them with the most enriching experience of art and culture remains our goal today. This goal could not be realized without a dedicated network of supporters that includes every Museum department, the members of the Multicultural Advisory Committee and the organizations they represent, the students on the College Group Committee, our sponsors, and of course, our visitors.
These partnerships and the exchange of ideas they promote have proved essential to building new audiences, maintaining relationships, and heightening awareness about the Metropolitan and its myriad offerings among New York's diverse communities.
With so many cultures represented under one roof, the Met provides a common ground for all visitors to embark on journeys of artistic, historical, and self-discovery.
