I am proud to become the Director of a Museum that places so much emphasis on audience development. In these challenging times, it is more important than ever that we maintain the Museum's mission of staying relevant and accessible to the diverse communities that surround us.
The Museum's success is dependent on its adaptability. In response to the changing economic structure of our nation and world, the Met strives to strengthen its technological enterprises, using social media to target a broader audience than ever before (see Met Share) and communicate to that audience its importance to the success of this institution.
Additionally, the Museum continues to court the students of New York, through the innovative College Group at the Met, a program which fosters a mutually beneficial and, hopefully, lifelong relationship with the Museum. The Mentoring Program for College Juniors, now in its fifth year, provides internships to students from traditionally underrepresented communities, giving them the opportunity to experience the Museum's collection and administration first-hand.
As we move through the twenty-first century, it is with programs like the Multicultural Audience Development Initiative that the Museum will remain the admired destination that has enriched the lives of so many for so long.
