Photography: Beginnings

Galax, Virginia 1962

Jeff L. Rosenheim, Curator in Charge, Department of Photographs

In the world of art, certain names conjure up iconic images, and major works have instant recognition. This series examines the first photographs by six modern masters of the medium. How did the artists launch their careers? What did they do with the camera? Might the seeds of their achievement be visible in their earliest work?

Today's topic: Diane Arbus, Lee Friedlander, William Eggleston
