Family Afternoon—Explore the 81st Street Studio

Come ready to look, learn, and create! Drop in for free, hands-on family fun to continue celebrating the opening of the 81st Street Studio, our new drop-in discovery and play space—where art and science meet! Explore the hands-on stations as you find out more about clay, metal, and wood using STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) connections and inspired by artworks in The Met collection. Jump into art-making and other activities to experiment working with these materials—and to become a Met Field Scientist!

Families with children of all ages and abilities are welcome; recommended for children ages 3–11. Materials are provided.

Hearty Helmets

Use different kinds of metals to create your own helmet inspired by artworks at The Met. Will yours be fancy, sturdy, or scary?

Stacking Sculptures

How high can you go? Construct a wood-glue sculpture and rise to the challenge!

Tinker with Clay

Take a seat at a potter’s wheel or make a pinch pot as you explore how clay can take many forms.

Make Drums and Prints

Enjoy the same hands-on art-making stations as in the 81st Street Studio with extra room to spread out! Create your own drum and print, inspired by works in The Met collection.

Field Guide Adventure

Go on an art and science adventure! Pick up your 81st Street Studio Family Field Guide and become a Met Field Scientist as you explore artworks made of wood, clay, and metal throughout the Museum.

Mystery at the Museum Book Signing

Join author Helen Friel for a signing of Mystery at the Museum, an interactive book that takes you on an adventure at The Met. This latest book collaboration between DK and The Met features 18 engaging puzzles. Copies of the book will be available for purchase in The Met Store.
