Oktoberfest at The Cloisters

Oktoberfest2013

On September 28, 2013, Spectrum celebrated Oktoberfest and the seventy-fifth anniversary of The Cloisters museum and gardens, the Metropolitan Museum's branch in northern Manhattan, at an intimate gathering held when The Cloisters was closed to the public.

Beer, a staple drink for medieval Europeans and the libation of choice for Oktoberfest, was served in The Cloisters' beautifully tended gardens. A brewmaster from Harpoon Brewery discussed unique brewing processes and offered a tasting of the company's IPA, Octoberfest, Rich & Dan's Rye IPA, and UFO Pumpkin beers. Meats, cheeses, and soft pretzels—foods evoking a traditional Oktoberfest celebration—were also served.

Carly Still, assistant horticulturist at The Cloisters and a contributor to the blog The Medieval Garden Enclosed, gave garden tours with a particular emphasis on hops throughout the evening.
