The Metropolitan's collection of African art focuses on the richly diverse artistic traditions created in sub-Saharan Africa from the thirteenth to the twenty-first century. These range from art by ivory carvers and brass casters commissioned by sixteenth-century sovereigns of the Kingdom of Benin in present-day Nigeria, to a formidable Kongo Power Figure that presided over the affairs of a community in the Democratic Republic of the Kongo during the nineteenth century. The works presented relate to regional artistic movements that developed across West-Central Africa and extend down to its southernmost tip in media such as wood, terracotta, stone, gold, silver, brass, ivory, and textiles.
