TEACHER PROGRAMS

Workshops at the Museum

The Museum offers a variety of programs and resources designed for elementary-, middle-, and high-school educators that explore objects in the Museum's collection and special exhibitions, interdisciplinary curriculum integration, and methods for teaching with objects.

Workshops occur on weekends and evenings during the school year, and on weekdays during the summer. The programs take several formats, such as half-day and full-day events, evenings for educators, multiday collaborations with other institutions, weeklong summer institutes, and interactive online forums. Participants receive materials, including a certificate of completion, at the conclusion of each workshop.

Specific programs and topics change each semester. Search the calendar for upcoming topics and schedules.

All programs require advance registration. Once you have reviewed the schedule of programs in the calendar, enroll using the Registration Request Form. Programs may be canceled at any time due to insufficient enrollment. Please note that these programs are only available to active K–12 classroom teachers.

The Museum produces a range of publications for educators, which are available in the Teacher Resource Center in the Museum's Nolen Library.

Teachers are encouraged to bring their classes to the Museum or to The Cloisters, either guided by a Museum staff member or as a self-guided group. See School Group Visits (Grades 1–12) for more information. A special workshop is offered each semester to help prepare teachers to lead self-guided group visits.

Summer Teacher Institutes

Each summer, the Museum offers multi-day Teacher Institutes for current K–12 educators. While the majority of these programs take place inside the Museum's galleries and classrooms, select programs are offered as online courses. Program formats and topics change each year. Fees vary and registration is required. For more information, please contact Teacher Programs at 212-570-3985 or teachers@metmuseum.org.

Webinars for Educators

Explore works of art and museum resources right at your computer through interactive online discussion and activities. Each live 75-minute session with Museum staff includes a range of activities that may be adapted for students. All participants receive digital classroom resource materials, as well as a recording of the session that they may watch at any time or use with students. See a list of webinars for educators.

Professional Development for Educators

A professional-development program may be requested by groups of K–12 classroom teachers, administrators, librarians, curricula coordinators, arts organizations, or principals who would like a professional in-service program tailored to their interests. These sessions prepare educators to visit the Museum with their classes and to incorporate works of art into their curricula. Programs explore the content and context of works of art, demonstrate methods for teaching with objects, and provide suggestions for integrating the study of art into classroom curricula. A variety of topics are offered, and programs range from ninety-minute gallery tours for educators to full-day programs. These programs are scheduled by application. Download the application (PDF).
