TEACHER PROGRAMS

Workshops at the Museum

The Museum offers a variety of programs and resources designed for elementary-, middle-, and high-school educators that explore objects in the Museum’s collection and special exhibitions, interdisciplinary curriculum integration, and methods for teaching with objects.

Workshops occur on weekends and evenings during the school year, and on weekdays during the summer. The programs take several formats, such as half-day and full-day events, evenings for educators, multiday collaborations with other institutions, weeklong summer institutes, and interactive online forums. Participants receive materials, including a certificate of completion, at the conclusion of each workshop.

Specific programs and topics change each semester. Search the calendar for upcoming topics and schedules.

All programs require advance registration. Please review the schedule of programs in the calendar before registering. Download the Registration Request Form (PDF). If registering for a program less than two weeks in advance, please call 212-570-3985 to confirm that space is still available. Programs may be canceled at any time due to insufficient enrollment. Please note that these programs are only available to current K–12 classroom teachers.

Publications for educators are also available in the Nolen Library and Teacher Resource Center. You may also view and download many of these publications.

Teachers are encouraged to bring their classes to the Museum or to The Cloisters, either guided by a Museum staff member or as a self-guided group. See School Groups for more information. A special workshop is offered each semester to help prepare teachers to lead self-guided group visits.

For information, please contact Teacher Programs at 212-570-3985 or teachers@metmuseum.org.

Online/Onsite Workshops

Discover great works of art with curators and Museum educators from the convenience of home before experiencing them in person. These blended online and onsite workshops include both asynchronous interaction (threaded discussion, collaborative wiki projects, blogging) and synchronous, real-time webinars that bring you in contact with Museum staff as well as with other teachers from a variety of geographic areas. Participants must have access to a computer with high-speed Internet access. A headset with built-in microphone is recommended for full participation in the live sessions. For more information, please contact Teacher Programs at 212-570-3985 or teachers@metmuseum.org. Fees vary and registration is required.

No online/onsite workshops are currently scheduled. Information about fall workshops will be available in late summer.

Professional Development for Educators

A professional-development program may be requested by groups of K–12 classroom teachers, administrators, librarians, curricula coordinators, arts organizations, or principals who would like a professional in-service program tailored to their interests. These sessions prepare educators to visit the Museum with their classes and to incorporate works of art into their curricula. Programs explore the content and context of works of art, demonstrate methods for teaching with objects, and provide suggestions for integrating the study of art into classroom curricula. A variety of topics are offered, and programs range from ninety-minute gallery tours for educators to full-day programs. These programs are scheduled by application. Download the application (PDF).
