Formerly falsely signed and dated (lower center, on boat): VG 1637. The signature and date were removed during cleaning in March 1967.

This is probably one of several copies after a lost work by Van Goyen [see Ref. Beck 1973]; however, there are similar works by Van Goyen still in existence, including a panel dated 1645 in the National Gallery, London, another panel of 1645 on the London art market in 1923, one of 1648 formerly in the Argenti collection, London, and one dated 1651 in the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington.

The church was at one time identified as the one at Overschie, a village on the Schie river between Delft and Rotterdam, but in fact the site is probably, as usually with Van Goyen, imaginary.
