The large building at the center of the composition is the Grote Kerk (Great Church) in The Hague. The other structures have all been identified and include additional buildings in The Hague and, at right and further in the distance, the Oude Kerk of the village of Rijswijk, the Oude Kerk and Nieuwe Kerk and town hall of Delft, and the spire of the church in the village of Wateringen [see chart in archive file].

Van Goyen depicts The Hague from approximately the same viewpoint in a drawing of 1651 (Beck 1972, no. 223; Musée du Louvre, Paris).
