  • Description

To the British gentry, large and stately trees were both attractive and emblematic. Carefully arranged to ornament their landscaped vistas, they were also living symbols of ancient lineage and the established order of things. Seated on the roots of the spreading oak, the solitary figure provides the necessary human scale to comprehend its vast size and age.
