Faking It Symposium: The Apartments

Program information

The symposium "Truth, Lies, and Photographs" was presented in conjunction with the exhibition Faking It: Manipulated Photography before Photoshop, on view October 11, 2012, through January 27, 2013. In this talk, Artist Nancy Davenport discusses her artwork, including The Apartments, a series of photographs whose interpretation changed after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Davenport's artwork includes screensavers, animations, and manipulated photographs.

  • Description

    In these two yachting scenes, several layers of artifice—the calculated informality of the poses; the seamless blending of studio set and painted background; details such as a tilted deck, a flapping sail, a hand securing a hat against the wind—coalesce into a marvelous naturalism that belies the pictures’ cobbled-together construction.

    Per provenance report, purchased from the Associated Screen News Ltd in 1956. The Associated Screen News Ltd acquired William Notman & Son Photographic Studio based in Montreal in 1935.
