Ubac made a series of photographs on this theme; compare L'amour fou (text by Rosalind Krauss and Jane Livingston), New York: Abbeville Press, 1985, pp. 71-73, esp. Fig. 63, evidently a later state (dated 1939) and slightly cropped version of the same image from this series, to which landscape and background elements as well as weapon-like objects have been added. Refer to enclosed photocopy for details on technique. Compare also Claude Magelhaes d Laurent Roosen, De fotokunst in België 1839-1940, Duerne-Antwerp, 1970, pl. 121, which gives a date of 1938. [Note that this publication gives Ubac's birth year as 1910, whereas L'amour fou gives 1909.]
