In the post-conquest Andes, the Virgin Mary was a beloved figure and played an important role in the region's spiritual culture. Representations of the Virgin were associated with numerous miracles and sometimes conflated with images of Pachamama, the pre-conquest Earth Mother; this joining contributed to native conversions to Christianity. The Virgin of Guápulo is a famous cult statue located outside Quito, Ecuador. Her garments reflect the Spanish tradition of dressing religious statues in expensive silks. Aware of the association of Europe with power and status, the Inca noblewomen of Cuzco often incorporated designs (notably the interlacing lattice motif) from European fabrics into their own garments.
