  • Description

Zaō Gongen is a rare example of a purely Japanese addition to the Buddhist pantheon. In the era when this image was created, many religious practices associated with Zaō took place in remote temples deep in the mountains. Through these rites, mountain ascetics attempted to appropriate for themselves Zaō’s sheer physical power.
