Late Ming lacquer boxes with basketry panels were used for the presentation of gifts and documents and for storage. The juxtaposition of the carved red lacquer and the gold-colored basketry is typical of the taste for multicolored designs during this period. During the seventeenth century, such round-shouldered boxes were gradually replaced by those with straight sides.
