Esther Bell. "Catalogue Raisonné of the Thaw Collection." Studying Nature: Oil Sketches from the Thaw Collection. Ed. Jennifer Tonkovich. New York, 2011, p. 108, no. 19, ill. (color), calls it "The Bay of Naples with Vesuvius and Castel dell'Ovo" and dates it about 1818–20.



There are two known related compositions: "The Gulf of Naples with Vesuvius Seen from Posilippo," 1819, oil on canvas, 29 1/2 x 39 3/4 in. (75 x 101 cm), private collection; and "Neapolitan Fruit Merchant with His Family on the Salita di Sant'Antonio, with a View of the Gulf of Naples," 1822, oil on canvas, 8 7/8 x 12 1/4 in. (22 x 31 cm), Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, Nationalgalerie, NG 54.
